What is AUM? An Introduction to the Ancient Universal Mysteries
If you have spent any time with the Ageless Wisdom Teachings — the writings of Alice Bailey, the Seven Rays, or esoteric astrology — you may have come across the name AUM. It is more than a sacred sound. AUM is also the name of a living Masonic Order whose work sits at the meeting place of Freemasonry, the Ancient Mysteries, and the spiritual path. This post is a gentle introduction for those already on the inner path.
AUM — the full name
AUM stands for Ancient Universal Mysteries. The Grand Lodge AUM is an international FreeMasonic Order, founded in its current form in 1992, though its roots reach back to an earlier esoteric Masonic group that worked between 1935 and 1942. After a period of dormancy, the impulse was taken up again and re-established — built on the same foundations but with a new generation of seekers ready to carry the work forward.
What makes AUM distinctive among Masonic Orders is this: it admits both men and women on an equal footing, recognising that the soul — which may incarnate through a male or female body from one life to the next — is neither one nor the other. Equality here is not a political position; it is a metaphysical one, grounded in the doctrine of rebirth.
Freemasonry and the inner life
To those unfamiliar with it, Freemasonry can seem opaque — all symbols and ceremony and closed doors. But at its heart, Freemasonry in the esoteric tradition is something far older and more profound than its outer forms suggest.
AUM describes Freemasonry as "an earthly symbol of a Heavenly archetype" — a custodian of the Ancient Mysteries, which are the timeless teachings about the nature of the soul and its passage through life and death and life again. The ceremonial degrees of Masonry, viewed through this lens, are not arbitrary rituals but allegorical portrayals of the soul's own initiatory unfolding: from darkness to light, from ignorance to knowledge, from the illusion of death to the reality of immortality.
This will be immediately recognisable to anyone who has studied esoteric astrology or the Seven Rays. The language is different, but the map is the same.

The restoration of the Mysteries
One of AUM's central purposes is what it calls the Restoration of the Mysteries — the re-weaving of the Ancient Wisdom into outer life, so that the inner teachings are no longer hidden away but accessible as "a natural part of the program for human living."
This is very much in keeping with the spirit of the Aquarian Age. As the Age of Pisces gave way to Aquarius, the esoteric becomes exoteric — not cheapened or trivialised, but offered more openly to those who are ready. AUM sees Masonry as one of the vehicles through which this restoration is meant to occur.
The degrees as a map of spiritual growth
AUM works with a system of five symbolic initiations within three degrees of Masonic Craft. For the spiritually minded, these degrees mirror stages of inner development that many traditions describe under different names:
— The First Degree speaks to the candidate entering the light —
awakening, the first step onto the path.
— The Second Degree deepens the work — the building of the inner
temple, the disciplining of the mind and will.
— The Third Degree enacts the great mystery of death and
resurrection — the soul's triumph over the personality and the rising of
the illumined human being.
Those familiar with the concept of initiation in the Bailey writings will recognise these as symbolic reflections of the five major initiations described in that body of teaching.
Three principles, one purpose
AUM holds three grand principles at its centre: Brotherly Love, Relief of Suffering, and the Cultivation of Truth. Its single overarching aim is the building of the Temple of Humanity — a world in which the light of the soul is expressed in outer life, individually and collectively.
It does not recruit. Each person finds their way to it in their own time, under what AUM calls "the impulse of the soul." Every applicant must be sponsored by two existing members and admitted by unanimous ballot — a process that preserves the integrity of the work.
Why it matters for spiritual seekers
For those on the path — meditators, students of esoteric astrology and the Seven Rays, seekers of the Ageless Wisdom — AUM offers something relatively rare: a structured group form in which the inner life and the outer practice meet. It provides ceremonial, ritual, and fraternal discipline as a framework for genuine spiritual development.
It is not a shortcut, and it is not for everyone. But for those drawn to working within a living tradition that holds the thread of the Mysteries with care and seriousness, it is worth knowing that such a thing exists — and that its doors are open to women and men alike.
